William Thomas Dunkeld was a son of William L. and Lila M. Dunkeld of Pontiac, Michigan, U.S.A. On 24 december 1944, at about 12.35, Dunkeld was providing escort for a strafing operation. He was shot down by a German FW-190 fighter and crashed with his Hawker Typhoon IB (PD462) near Soerendonk, The Netherlands.
