William Raymond Burns was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Burns. He was born in Whitehaven, Cumberland. Burns was married to Elsie Burns of Kinley, Yorkshire.
According to the Roll of Honour published by the Society of Friends of the Airborne Museum (Jan Hey 1999 and 2011) Burns was given a field burial 180 metres west of Hartenstein Hotel at Oosterbeek.
The authors of the book 'When Dragons Flew' (Stuart Eastwood, Charles Gray and Alan Green) wrote about the death of Burns on page 131: 'At about 08.30 hrs a direct hit on 1st Air-landing Brigade HQ killed four officers, two of whom were from the Border Regiment, Capt William Burns, the Brigade Intelligence Officer, and Lt Anthony Thomas, the Brigade Defence Platoon Commander.
