Richard Bert Bond was a son of John William and Ellen Maria Bond. He was married to Jessie Bond of Stroud Green, Middlesex. His brother Stanley George also died on service.
Bond was the flight engineer of Stirling EF-298. The plane took off from Harwell Airfield at 14.34Hrs and flew to Arnhem on a resupply mission. About 1605hrs, during the dropping sequence, the aircraft was hit by Flak and it turned away from the Dropzone but crashed very shortly afterward in woods east of Panoramahoeve, Ede. The crew of six men and two Army Air Corps despatchers didn't survive the crash. It is said that only three bodies were actually found at the crashsite.
According to the Roll of Honour published by the Society of Friends of the Airborne Museum (Jan Hey 1999 and 2011) Bond was given a field burial near the aircraft.
