Rank : Serjeant
Regiment : South Staffordshire Regiment
Unit : 2nd (Airborne) Battalion
Date of Death : 25-09-1944

Alfred Bird was a son of Alfred and Kate Bird. He was married to Mabel Eliza Audrey Bird of Watford, Hertfordshire.
Bird served with HQ Platoon, B Company.
The authors of the book 'By Land, Sea and Air' (2003), Alexander Junier, Bart Smulders and Jaap Korsloot wrote about Bird on page 128. The South Stafford had just been given orders to retreat to the Van Hofwegen laundry and 'here the men could recuperate after their ordeal of the previous days. Since there was plenty of clean clothing, most of the men were able to change underclothing, and had a bite to eat as AQMS Bird of B Company had set out to get some food and ammunition'.
According to the Roll of Honour published by the Society of Friends of the Airborne Museum (Jan Hey 1999 and 2011) Bird was given a field burial halfway between Benedendorpsweg 119 and the primary school on Weverstraat.
