Robert Barnes was a son of John and Margaret Barnes of Cleator Moor, Cumberland. According to the Battalion Roll, published in the book 'When Dragons Flew' (Stuart Eastwood, Charles Gray and Alan Green), Barnes was reported missing on 19 september 1944.
Barnes was given a field burial beside the road to the Driel ferry in Oosterbeek (near positions of B Company). He was later reburied at the Airborne Cemetery.
