Leo Ackland was a son of William and Elsie Ackland of Erdington, Birmingham. He was born in Belfast. 
Ackland left for Arnhem from Spanhoe Airfield on 18 september 1944 at around 1210 hrs. Around 1420 he landed by parachute or glider. 
It is not known where Ackland died. According to some veterans Captain Beaumont-Thomas, Lieutenant Eden, Sapper Yates and two others were killed and buried in the Ommershof area in Oosterbeek. The two unnamed soldiers may have been Leo Ackland and Sapper Richard Adderley
